SCENE 1

Niles sat in his office, high atop Charm City’s protruding skyline. He was the CEO of Sentec, a biochemistry company dealing with olfactory products; as scents and pheromones.

His whole life, as it related to his work and the company, was stored on the hard drive of the electrically driven machine sitting in front of him. His laptop held many of the company’s dirty little secrets, along with the most valuable product information available. Emails, correspondence with other executives, employee histories, background checks, end of month and year datum, everything on the shared-directory files which adorned the drives “A” through “ZZ.” Currently, it showed his email, buddy list and a word document he was typing. Niles wasn’t doing company work.

In the background, symphonic music set the tone. The office was rather regular, just the way he liked it. Behind him, a wall of awards and certificates; Niles had been the face of Sentec ever since its inception in 1997 and ever since its total coup de etas of the fragrance industry from mid-1998 on. The awards, however, were careful not to cover up the bronzed motto hanging eternally over his head:

“Making SCENTS of your life!”

Click click click, the keys beneath Niles’s fingers were pressed one by one. Niles stared intently at his screen. Anyone passing by the office at that precise moment would have the same thought: Wow, he must be working on something immense! In reality, Niles was writing to Jack Prowl, regional Director of Relations for Sentec, fellow fraternity brother to Niles Coltrane, and longtime partner-in-crime. The content read as follows:

Hey Jack, what’s up? Great game last night, did you examine it? The Lions were within twelve at one point. Oh well, I guess there’s always next year to win the division, right? So anyway dude, I found the funniest thing on the internet this morning! Check this out…

And so on and so forth. Yep, ‘ol Niles was extremely busy and focused on the solid future development of Sentec.

It had been like this ever since his brother, Jonathan Bradley Coltrane the 3rd, had revolutionized the industry in 1997. He appointed his younger brother to the CEO position after taking an active interest in the R&D portion of the company. Jonathan was barely ever present during the day. Even if he were, and came across Niles’s work, he would never yell. Jonathan made the best out of every event, including all the shortcomings of his brother. Yes, Niles was PR, a good-looking face in a high position in the company. And every employee knew this, or idea they did.

Suddenly there came a dinging; Niles’s body began shaking; A stillness in the young man’s typing; and an error message flashed on the conceal. Hitting “OK” without reading, the computer returned to the desktop, closing out of most of the programs Niles was working with. He noticed his icons were jumbled, and he felt a tinge on anger at losing his original email.

Never the less, Niles pushed back his high-back leather chair and stood up. Walking to the bar on the side of his office, he stood in front of the mirror-backed desk. There sat a bottle of scotch: Johnnie Walked Blue Tag. It had been a reveal from a business partner after his last outing of golf. Niles bent down and opened the micro fridge below. The bottle top gave out a short pop and hiss, freeing the Miller Lite inside.

Niles returned to the computer, bottle in hand. Double-clicking the email icon, he attempted to reopen a draft of his previous email. No such luck, and the computer did not acknowledge.

He reached to the intercom on his desk, and with the extension of a finger, Niles waited.

“Yes? ”

“Tony, would you come in here please? ”

“Sure thing Niles. Be right there.”

Anthony “Tony” Damsker, the vice president of the company, had also been a frat brother of Niles. Niles brought him onto the Sentec team at the same time Prowl was brought into service. Keep your friends close… and Niles had no enemies.

The door opened. Tony entered the room.

“Hey man, what’s the problem? ”

“Yeah, so I was typing an email to P-row, and the computer went wacky. Do you have any idea how to get the message back? ”

“Did you effect it to the draft box? ”

“Nope. I didn’t know I had to.”

“You should always do it to the draft box, well, that’s what I’ve heard.”

“Tony, I was going to just fire it off. Why the hell would I achieve it to the draft box?!”

“Niles, I’m not a tech geek! How should I know. I’ve just heard that-”

Niles interrupted, as was his usual thing, “Where did you hear that? That’s boring!”

“I don’t know. I did though.”

“Ok, so did you hear anything about getting back an email? ”

“No. Sorry man. You’re just going to have to retype it.”

Niles took a sip of beer and huffed, “Oh man. I HATE that! I forget what I wrote already!”

Tony walked to the micro fridge and grabbed himself a bottle of Miller Lite. Uncapping the bottle, he took a long gulp, and turned to Niles, still staring intently at his computer screen.

“You know, there’s that one tech guy downstairs who worked on the great Blue-Screen fiasco of 2003. You know, the dude who reprogrammed all the computers for Y2K. Oh, what’s his name? ”

Niles looked up with a hopeful, childish look.

“Oh yeah! What is it? McKean? McNeal? Mc-something!”

“McLellan! That’s it! Jim McLellan!” Tony leaned befriend on the bar, taking a long, satisfying gulp of beer, and smiling smugly. “Jim McLellan.”

Niles hit the pager to his receptionist, and without her answering, he immediately barked, “GET ME McLELLAN!”

SCENE 2

In the closet of an office, not even on the first floor, Jim McLellan, Rory Johnston and Philip Thomas sat in a triad. Their office space looked more accommodating to mice than to human beings. Paper boxes; sheets of loose leaf; dot matrix reams; printer cartridges; cables; old and new computer equipment; the décor of the place reminded one of a bad B-Sci Fi flick.

But the three men were friends, and had been since ’97. Johnston and Thomas had grown up together; McLellan joined the team in college, through the “Trek Geek” club. Now, instead of Trekkies, they were the backbone of the company, running the computers without fail for almost ten years.

McLellan was the only one who was known throughout the company. He did most of the brunt work, being the newest member of the crew. Rory seemed the natural leader, but his thicker frame did not allow him the versatility of getting into minute spaces as Jim’s meek 159 lb body did. Thomas was flat out lazy; brilliant with code, programs and installs, but lazy.

The men were having their morning, second-cup, which became a tradition, being as though their almost perfect computer precision world above ran without philosophize or snag.

Rory spoke, “So, I was thinking about talking with Rita this afternoon and seeing if she wanted to accompany me to the movies a bit later on.” He always had an unfamiliar manner of speaking.

Jim broke in. “Rita Geer?! Man, support dreaming! She’s hot stuff. And you know it. She’s out of your league. She’s out of your galaxy!”

“Thanks Jim. Shut up.”

“Hey, guys, guys! Stop it, alright. McLellan, you and I both know,” turning towards Rory, “That this guy has no chance in the world!”

All three ended up laughing. An empty cup, possibly from coffee round three, two days ago, went flying in Philip’s direction, originating from Rory’s cubical.

“You guys both go to hell!”

“Seriously Scream,” Jim said, “What’s the worst she could say? Nothing you haven’t ever heard, you know? ”

“True true,” Rory said.

“Except yes,” Added Philip. Again, another cup in orbit; again, a vociferous round of laughing.

“Just for that comment, I’m putting you on mouse ball cleanup! We have about thirty odd tickets that ask for someone to near clean the balls on their mice.”

Philip began giggling, “Sounds like a fun job.”

Jim kept to himself. He shook his head, and took a sip of coffee. Burning his tongue, he breathed in some cool air between clenched teeth, and turned to his screen to play FreeCell. Opening the program, Jim turned his full attention to the screen. This respite was interrupted by a knock at the open door.

All three men turned to see the suit-clad gentleman with the sour look on his face, covered, of course, by dark sunglasses… inside.

“Heavy,” Rory commented.

Philip began whistling Here Come The Men In Black.

The man didn’t enter the room. He gave the impression that he was above what went on down here in the basement office. Coldly, he questioned, “Jim McLellan? ”

Jim didn’t know what to say. Philip stopped whistling, and both he and Rory looked over at Jim blankly. Jim mouthed succor to them: I don’t know!

“Yes? ”

“Mr. McLellan, I’m going to need you to come with me.”

“Can I ask what this is about? Am I in trouble? ”

“No, sir, nothing like that. But, your services and skills are needed. Mr. Coltrane requested your expertise.”

“By name? ”

“Yes, by name.”

The look on all three of the mens’ faces was the same: Impressed. Jim slowly rose, and walked to the door. Unsurely, he checked back to the other two men. They just stared blankly. Finally, Philip regained his sarcastic composure: “You’re attractive up in the world Jim!”

Jim was unsure what to ask.

SCENE 3

PRODUCER’S NOTE : This scene MUST be shot as grandiose as possible. The walk to the office MUST be exaggerated to the fullest extent!

The man in the glasses led Jim silently to the elevator. Pressing the button, the man simply stood, spread eagle at shoulder separation, with hands folded into one another behind his back.

It took forever for the elevator to come the bottom, and Jim’s mind raced. He began to sweat. The man remained wordless, even when the elevator door’s opened; even when he allowed Jim to walk in, go to the benefit and stand; even when he pulled out his access card and slid it through the reader; even when the elevator jerked, and rose 10 floors; and even when the machine stopped and reopened the doors facing the penthouse offices.

When the doors finally opened at the top, without so much as a shimmy or a shake of the car, Danette Guard, the world’s hottest secretary and personal assistant to Niles Coltrane, greeted Jim and the man in glasses. The man in the glasses smiled, the first show of outward emotion the entire time; Danette smiled back. Jim, who knew her only from the casual, passing hello, said his usual hello, and said it, as usual, towards the ground; Danette said hello back, but towards his face.

The man in glasses said in a charming voice reserved for only she, “This is Jim McLellan, here to see Niles.”

“Great. He’s been waiting for him. Go on in, Jim.”

Jim looked at her for a moment. His body was frozen as the single syllable of his name rang off of her tongue. Shaking off the encaptivating moment, he thanked her and headed past her desk and through the large office door.

SCENE 4

Niles was smooth drinking his beer, and Tony was collected sitting on the bar when Jim entered the room. Tony hopped down off of the table, and cleared his throat. Niles smiled, he was a cordial fellow anyway.

“Ahhh, Mr. McLellan. Thank you for coming on such short notice.”

“Not a spot sir. And please, call me Jim.”

“Jim it is. Then call me Niles.”

“Oh, I don’t think I can do that, sir.”

“Niles.”

“What? ”

“Its Niles.”

“Oh, umm, sure thing. Ok Niles.”

“Better! Well then, here’s the deal. I was working on my computer before, and all of a sudden, the thing went nuts! I want to restore an email I was typing, but didn’t save it. I didn’t do anything to it because I didn’t want to lose anything I was working on. Can you relieve me out? ”

“Well, I’ll certainly try to.” Jim stopped in his tracks. “Uhhh, is there anything on there that you don’t want me to see? ”

“What? Like what? ” Niles was totally serious.

“Like the porn you were just looking at, Niles.” For a moment, Tony wasn’t even there. Jim looked pale. This was too much. “No, seriously, it’s the Confidentiality agreement for the company, Niles.”

“Oh,” Niles responded, “that’s all just bullshit. Smoke and mirrors. No, go ahead Jim. Its frigid. Oh, and on that note, my password is Danette.”
Simple enough, he thought. Though, somehow, Jim had anticipated his meeting with Niles Coltrane to go differently. Now, he was honest a glorified frat boy in a suit, as was Anthony Damsker. He just watched as the men spoke, moving his head back and forth per their discussion.

“Ok Sir. Er, Niles. Let’s take a scrutinize then.” Jim began to travel towards the computer. Niles began to move away from the computer.

“Well, that won’t be necessary. Hey Tony, you hungry? Its about lunch time.”

“Yeah, famished.”

“Me and Tony (Tony and I, conception Jim) are going to get some lunch. Just have her fixed when I get back. Thanks Jim, I owe you!”

With that, the two men left the room. Jim, as the door closed, heard them mention to Danette to hold their calls, and then heard her sweet voice respond “Ok Niles. Enjoy!” And with that, Jim was alone.

He sat down in the leather desk chair, and for a moment, imagined what it would be like to get out of the computer allotment, and into the management section. An impossible dream, but everyone had those, right? He looked at the camouflage. Nothing looked busted. Jim grabbed the mouse, and gave it a shake. The icon on the screen moved with his motions.

All excellent here.

He double-clicked on Word; the program opened.

What the hell is the problem?

He double-clicked the email. Nothing happened.

Hmmm, could this really be the reason he wanted me to fix this?

Jim was speedy with a computer. He had solved the Y2K issue back in the late months of 99. It, too, was an easy fix… but not THIS easy.

Confident in his skills, Jim reached to the CPU and held the button in for three seconds. The fan in the tower slowed to a stop. Hitting it again, the computer chugged to life.

On the password login prompt screen, Jim typed “DANETTE” and hit enter. Windows appeared. A message popped up immediately:

Your computer was shut down without saving previous data, would you like to restore temp-file stored work?

Jim shook his head. Idiot proof! He clicked “yes.” The computer began self-opening programs: Word, Internet Explorer, GroupWise and FreeCell. Busy man. Jim clicked on the headline of the email message in front of him.

Hey Jack, what’s up? Great game last night, did you see…

Jim leaned back and smiled, cracking his knuckles like he had performed the greatest job in the world.

(Stop FILM)

Niles Coltrane and Anthony Damsker went to a deli called Circles for lunch. Niles ate the Reuben sandwich and Tony had the Cheese Fish Special. Both said it was the greatest lunch they had ever eaten.

Danette Guard served Sentec for 30 long years, until she left for a full-blown career in porn. Her pictures in both Penthouse and Niles’s desk fueled her booming modeling career, as well as secured her standing with the company as the hottest secretary.

Rory Thompson and Philip Thomas went on to develop their own computer company after Rita Geer filed an unfortunate sexual harassment lawsuit against Rory. Their company, TrekGeek Computers, rivaled the likes of Macintosh and Dell. Following the company’s initial boom in success, they went dark and are seldom heard from. Currently they are said to be reclusive lovers, and have been spotted at various Star Sprint conventions across the United States.

Jim McLellan continued working for Sentec, refusing to leave to assist Rory and Philip with their company. Upon returning to his desk, Niles was so thrilled that he made Jim the head of Electronics and Technology for Sentec, representing the company and its computer-driven division of development worldwide. His image adorns the cover of many major computing magazines to this day.

After a fairly disappointing Masters in Augusta, the best golfers in the world will take aim at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, in hopes of capturing the 2007 US Open (June 14-17). Before we break down the favorites, let’s win a look at the course.

The last US Initiate to be played at Oakmont was in 1994, with “The Big Easy” Ernie Els taking the victory. If the players had misfortune at Augusta this year, just wait until they hit Oakmont. Believed by many to be the toughest course in North America, Oakmont serves up 180 deep bunkers, extremely expeditiously greens, thin fairways, and deep, thick rough. Oakmont was home to one of the most famous rounds in US Open history benefit in 1973, when Johnny Miller shot a 63 on Sunday to capture the 1973 US Open title. Oakmont will punish any golfer that doesn’t hit fairways, and will also hurt those golfers who are not extremely careful around the greens. Like many recent US Opens, the winner may not need to be under par this year, depending on the weather leading up to the tournament.

Tiger Woods is coming of what may be the most upsetting major of his career. For the first time as a professional, Tiger had a lead on Sunday at a Major and didn’t seal the deal. Is this going to affect Tiger? Has he lost his mojo? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding no. Nobody has ever done as well as Tiger has on Sundays at majors (perhaps Nicklaus), and Augusta was just a rapid reminder that Tiger is a human being. He’s got enough game to win on any golf course, and he remains the celebrated to win this year (he is getting 5/2 odds in Vegas). Tiger has two other US Open titles on his characterize, encourage in 2000 and 2002.

Last year was a tough one for Phil Mickelson fans as he slowly melted down on the 72nd hole of the tournament to attain second. After taking out his driver on 18, a fade which his caddy should have talked him out of, he bounced his drive off a roof, proceeded to chunk a shot out of the rough…..it’s actually too painful to re-live right now. Phil also had a disappointing Sunday at Augusta, as he never recovered from a triple-bogey on the first hole. Phil has the long drive and enough creativity around the greens to take home the crown, however, if his driving accuracy isn’t there, Phil will have no chance. In Vegas, Phil is currently sitting at a 10/1 shot to win.

Retief Goosen, who has been playing as well as anyone lately, has emerged as the fashionable pick to get, although the fashionable pick is not always the smartest pick (much like the Arizona Cardinals were the fashionable pick to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2006). “The Goose” finished in a three intention tie for second at the Masters (along with Tiger, and Rory Sabatini), and has historically performed well at the US Begin, taking the title in 2004 and 2001. One area of his game that will need to improve if Goosen wants to have a chance this year is his driving accuracy. After five events this season, Goosen ranked 157th on the tour in driving accuracy. Goosen, much like the Florida Gators in basketball this year, is the type of player that can scrutinize horrible in smaller tournaments that don’t mean much, then turn it on when he needs to in the Majors. Goosen is posted at 16/1 odds in Vegas.

As mentioned previously, Ernie Els won this tournament the last time it was held at Oakmont, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t do so again. Els is playing very well this season, ranking 1st on the tour in putting average and puts per round, and 3rd in scoring average. So far this season Ernie has played in six events, with one second plot finish and one third place accomplish. “The Big Easy” has two factors working against him as he heads into this years tournament. First off, he never recovered at the Masters this year after a double-bogey on the first hole, as he finished his first two rounds 10 over par with only two birdies and failed to make the cut. His second problem is his GIR (greens in regulation) percentage this year. After six events, Els is hitting only 58.95% of his greens in regulation, which ranks him at 174th on tour. Combined with the fact that he is 135th on tour in driving accuracy this year, and it could be a long day for Ernie. He currently sits at 18/1 odds.

The last time Vijay Singh took time off from golf was well….never. The hardest working man is golf has played in eleven events this year, whereas most of the heavy hitters have played in five or six. Vijay was ruined at the Masters by a third-round 79, and finished in a tie for 13th. Vijay ranks first this season in the FedEx points standings, mainly because he has played so many events. Despite taking home two victories at the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Vijay has only finished in the top ten one other time in eleven events this year. His statistics this year show no glaring strengths or weaknesses, as he ranks in between 15th and 79th in every major category. Like Els, Vijay sits at an 18/1 shot to win in 2007.

Other top prospects to win this year at Oakmont are Jim Furyk (20/1), defending champion Geoff Ogilvy (25/1), Adam Scott (33/1), Padraig Harrington (33/1), and Henrik Stenson (33/1). Masters champion Zach Johnson currently sits at 50/1.

Oglebay Park is probably the most well known attraction in the Ohio River Valley. Started over a hundred years ago, on the summer estate of Earl W. Oglebay, the present day park consists of 1700 acres of land that provides everything from lodging to skiing to swimming. Oglebay is perfect for a romantic weekend getaway, a family reunion, or a astonishing vacation for the whole family, any time of year. Considering that there is so much to do and so many dazzling things to witness at the park, we cannot possibly include all information about Oglebay. The park, however, does have its beget website, including all hours of operation, prices and entry fees, and contact information. The address for Oglebay Park on the internet is www.oglebay-resort.com. The information about to be presented is just to “whet your appetite” for the gourmet meal that IS Oglebay Park!

Lodging at Oglebay is presented in several forms, from a astronomical, luxurious full service hotel to rustic cabins. The Wilson Lodge is designed to give people a “home-away-from-home” atmosphere, with fireplaces, hardwood floors, and all the comfort measures you find in your own home. The hotel had a unusual addition built in 2006 that now includes suites with all updated furniture. A phase two understanding is in place to refurbish the older 212 rooms in the hotel in the near future.

Wilson Lodge is also home to several restaurants available at Oglebay Park. From gourmet dining to casual lunches and drinks with friends, you can find it all at the hotel. A spa, fitness center, and indoor pool are also available for those wanting to get in a morning workout.

Another reason to visit Oglebay Park is its world class golfing facilities. The park has three golf courses to choose from. The premier golfing experience at Oglebay has to be the two courses at Spiedel Golf Club. This includes the Arnold Palmer-designed course, which has been given a Golf Digest four-and-a-half-star rating. Also included is the Robert Trent Jones, Sr.-designed course, garnering a four-star rating from Golf Digest. There is also a par 3 course and a driving range to accommodate golfers of any age and experience.

Besides golfing, there are many other activities awaiting you at Oglebay Park. The park is initiate year-round, so there is always something to do for the whole family, whether it is snowing, or underneath the blazing hot sun, which sets as the backdrop for Schenk Lake’s “Dancing Waters.” This is a fair indicate of color and music that all members of the family will be mesmerized by. The lake also has paddleboats and allows fishing.

Another celebrated attraction at the park is the Oglebay Good Zoo. It houses animals from the United States, South America, and Africa. The zoo sits on approximately 30 acres in the heart of the park and is filled with beautiful walking trails and breathtaking views of North American animals in their natural habitats. The big red barn houses more domesticated animals such as horses and pigs, but the kids’ most favorite plot is the goat-petting complex. Here, mommy and daddy goats, along with their baby goats, will chase you around the fenced-in area begging for food. If you happen to buy a handful of food from the coin-operated machine, it’s a guarantee that you will be one of the goats’ current people. Many a child’s shorts and even diapers have been “nipped” down to the ground by baby goats, chasing after a child with a handful of food! It’s all in fun though, as the goats are very gentle and admire the attention from visitors to their compound.

The zoo also has some other unique activities, such as the Benedum Planetarium, which features daily laser shows set to music and laser shows simulating the clear night sky, filled with brilliant, colorful starts. In addition, guests can take a one and a half mile long train ride through the outdoor zoo area and enjoy an indoor itsy-bitsy train exhibit.

One of the most relaxing and wonderful things for individuals to do is to take a golfing vacation. While younger people may not appreciate golfing beyond who Tiger Woods is dating, the fact is that golfing can be a totally liberating, relaxing, challenging, and fun experience. Just look at Barack Obama! So if you’re ever in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania, there are three golf courses in particular that I’d suggest curious golfers check out.

Evergreen Golf Club

Evergreen is a 9 hole, public golf course. The Evergreen Golf Club par is 35/36. Par is the number of stokes it should take you to complete the nine holes; each hole has a different par number (suggested number of swings) which add up to the par of the course. Evergreen Golf Club has what is known as a “slope rating” of 116. A courses slope rating lies somewhere between 55 on the lower extinguish and 155 for the most challenging courses. 116 is just above average difficulty. Despite the fact that the Evergreen Golf Club is a shorter course, there are golf carts which are definitely available. Evergreen Golf Club also offers instruction, has a pro shop, lounge and offers “golf and stay” packages for folks who are interested. Discounts are available for ladies, students, seniors, and groups.

Rte 447 Cherry Lane Rd, P.O. Box 309 Analomink, PA 18320. 570-421-7721.

Hideaway Hills Golf Club

Hideaway Hills Golf Club is a bigger, 18 hole public course also located in the Pocono Mountains. Hideaway Hills Golf Club is a par 72. When you’re in the Pocono Mountains at Hideaway Hills Golf Club, players will enjoy a bent grass fairway, driving range, scenic views, has a comprehensive pro shop and Hideaway Hills Golf Club offers play & stay packages. For bigger events at Hideaway Hills, there are banquet facilities available and senior citizens are offered mid-week discounted rates.

P.O. Box 158, Carney Rd. Kresgiville, PA 18333. 610-681-6000.

Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort

A third Pocono Mountain Golf Course is the Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. With a sprawling 27 hole course, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort is a public/resort course. Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort checks in with a par of 71 and a “Tillinghast design.” In addition Shawnee Inn & Golf Course has a driving range, golf shop, academy, offers lessons, and has a 9 hole approach course. Moreover the Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort is lit for night play. Shawnee Inn & Golf Course also offers corporate & group outings and has a number of restaurants: River Room, The Bistro, and Sam Snead’s Tavern.

Located off I-80, exit 310. River Road, Shawnee on Delaware, PA.

So you want to break 100, 90, 80? You’ve read all the books you can salvage your hands on. You’ve spent hours playing round after round hoping that everything “clicks” this time. You assume about golf at work, you dream about it when you’re mowing the lawn, you can’t wait to net back out there in pursuit of that elusive magic number that makes you finally a “golfer” and not a hacker like all the rest of us. All you need is that one tip or new high dollar piece of equipment that will transform you into what you want to be. Maybe, but probably not.

Let’s take that last first. You have faded clubs you found at a stout brand at some garage sale somewhere in the neighborhood that has the name of some golfing great you’ve never heard of because they passed away before you were born. You dream of having the Acme 5000 triple XX Pros at your golf shop that you’ve had your eyes on for a long time. Why? The best, most expensive equipment in the world will not make you a better golfer. Sure, it might give you a few extra yards on your drive. This will only get you a couple of yards deeper into the woods because it’s not making you more accurate, it’s just adding distance. The average hacker has a degree of accuracy somewhere far less than a pro. Distance is a two-edged sword. It can indeed get you stop enough to that long par four to finally have a go at the green or maybe a short enough shot that you can actually and realistically go after the pin. The other side of that is that if you’re spraying it out to anywhere, you’re deeper in the woods having to use more strokes getting out than with your Old Tom Morris’. Remember that people were shooting rounds in the 80’s and 70’s with twisted sticks.

I’m not saying that you need to forget getting a nice set of clubs. Far from it. I actually do think that a new region of clubs can improve your accumulate. But not, perhaps, for the reasons you might be thinking of. Let’s take the putter as an example. The putter is the only club in your bag that you acquire simply because you like the way it looks and feels. There really is no other first-rate reason to buy one that costs $15 at a second hand store and the one in the box for $199.99. If this is the case why IS one better than another? I say it’s because you like the draw it feels and looks and therefore you have more confidence in it. Your stroke is more pure and unruffled with a putter you beget in than one you don’t. I was looking for a new putter for a long time. I wanted on that I could scoop a ball up from the green. Silly, I know but that’s what I was looking for in a putter. My problem in finding one is that I also like a square putter grip. I don’t like the way a pistol style grip feels. One day I putted 19 times in a round with my old putter and shot a score of 72 on a par 70 course. I went into the clubhouse and happened to find exactly the putter I wanted on sale for a reasonable price. I bought it and never played with my old putter again. If you maintain you’re going to make the putt, you’re more likely to do so. This is no small thing; belief in something. I would dare say this is why the pros get more putts. They know and believe they can.

So, to sum this all up: No, you don’t have to have the best and most expensive set of clubs out there to be able to play a agreeable round of golf. Yes, it doesn’t hurt to upgrade your set if for no other reason than to give you a sense of confidence. There is not shame in playing those Old Tom Morris’ in fact one of the best golfers I ever played a round with was still using hickory shafts and beat up blade heads (he shot a 69 with three bogeys).

Next installment will be a brief discussion of fundamentals.

The downtown situation is the oldest and most visited allotment on the city. Communities in this area include: Historic Beal Street, Overton Square, Mid-town, and Cooper-Young Neighborhood. Restaurants, night clubs, and many entertainment venues exist in this piece of the city.

Midtown is primarily a residential piece near downtown, with many hospitals and health care centers. Overton Square is widely known for restaurants, and entertainment options, geared to young professionals. The Cooper-Young allotment is a small, yet approved and trendy area. Many Art galleries, unique specialty shops, and coffeehouses are located in this area.
WALKING TOURS

Start: The Peabody Memphis hotel, on the corner of Union Avenue and Second Street.
Finish: The cobblestones on the bank of the Mississippi at the foot of Monroe Street.
Time: Approximately 2 hours, not including time spent at museums, shopping, meals, and other stops. It’s best to plan on spending the whole day doing this walking tour.

Best Times: Spring and descend, when the weather isn’t so muggy, and Friday and Saturday, when Rendezvous is open for lunch.
Worst Times: Summer days, when the weather is just too muggy for doing this much walking.
Start your tour of Memphis’s main historic districts at the posh:

The Peabody Memphis hotel
Home of the famous Peabody ducks, which use their day floating on the water of a marble fountain in the hotel’s lobby. The ducks accomplish their grand, red-carpet entrance each morning at 11a.m.
From the Peabody, wander 1 block west to Main Street, which is a pedestrian mall down which runs an old-fashioned trolley. Turn left, and in 2 blocks you’ll come to:

Beale Street
This street of restored buildings is Memphis’s main evening-entertainment district.
On the corner of Main and Beale, you can’t miss the: Orpheum Theatre
Originally built as a vaudeville theater in 1928, the theatre’s style and décor attracts many visitors, and is Memphis’s main performing-arts center.
Across Main Street from the theater stands a:
Statue of Elvis Presley Popular site for Elvis fans, and photographers: B.B. King’s Blues Club
Named for the Beale Street Blues Boy himself, this is the most popular club on the street, featuring live blues every night

A few doors down the street is the: A. Schwab Dry Goods Store
This store has been in business at this location since 1876, and looks like a time capsule inside, with many odd and unusual items

At Beale and Third streets is: W. C. Handy Park
Nearly constant source of live music in this park, also the space of a statue of Handy.
Across Beale Street from this park is the:
New Daisy Theatre
A accepted venue for various types of music, including rock, blues, and folk.
A few doors down from the New Daisy, is the restored: W. C. Handy House – Though it wasn’t always on this site, this house was where Handy lived when making a name for himself on Beale Street.

Diagonally across the intersection is: Church Park
Former slave, Robert Church, became the city’s first African-American millionaire, and donated to the African-American citizens of Memphis this park in 1899.
Continue another 2 long blocks up Beale Street and you will approach to the:

Hunt-Phelan House
One of the most impressive historic homes in Memphis.
Now head back up Beale Street and take a left on Main. This is the street down which the trolley runs, so if you’re feeling tired, you can hop on the trolley and take it south for the next 7 blocks. If you scramble, turn left on Butler Street, and if you ride, slither east on Calhoun Street. In a very short block, you’ll come to the:
National Civil Rights Museum
Site of the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The motel was converted into a museum documenting the struggle for civil rights.
After visiting this museum, head west on Butler Street and turn right on Front Street. You will now be walking through:

Cotton Row

During the Civil War, most the nation’s cotton was shipped through the docks 2 blocks away. This area of warehouses is a designated historic district, and many of the buildings have been renovated. Just before you reach the corner of Front and Union streets, scrutinize for the:

Carter Seed Store
West side of the street is the Carter Seed Store where the focus is on agricultural supplies and seeds. The store also features an old fashioned candy counter.
From the Carter Seed Store, take a left on Union Street and in 2 blocks to advance the banks of the Mississippi at an area known as:

“The cobblestones”
A free public parking area and where the Memphis Queen Line paddle-wheelers dock. The cobblestones were once used as ballast by boats coming up the river to win up cargoes of cotton.

SOUTH

Neighborhoods which comprise the South section of Memphis include: Oakhaven, Whitehaven, Westwood, Parkway Village, Capleville, Fox Meadows, and Southwind. Whitehave is primarily comprised of an African American population. Elvis purchased Graceland after the area was subdivided decades ago, creating a lot of interest in the area. Today, the Whitehaven Shopping Plaza is the primary hub of the community. Southland Shopping Mall, which was one of the first malls in the country is located in Shelby Drive. Hickory Hill is a middle class, family oriented, primarily African American neighborhood. A growing population of white families also live in this area. The Hickory Ridge Mall, and the World Overcomer Outreach Ministries Church are located in this section of the city.

It’s best to belief on spending the whole day doing this walking tour.

Best Times: Spring and fall, when the weather isn’t so muggy, and Friday and Saturday, when Rendezvous is open for lunch.
Worst Times: Summer days, when the weather is just too muggy for doing this much walking.
Start your tour of Memphis’s main historic districts at the posh:

The Peabody Memphis hotel
Home of the famous Peabody ducks, which spend their day floating on the water of a marble fountain in the hotel’s lobby. The ducks make their grand, red-carpet entrance each morning at 11a.m.
From the Peabody, slither 1 block west to Main Street, which is a pedestrian mall down which runs an frail trolley.

Named for the Beale Street Blues Boy himself, this is the most well-liked club on the street, featuring live blues every night

A few doors down the street is the: A. Schwab Dry Goods Store
This store has been in business at this location since 1876, and looks like a time capsule inside, with many odd and unusual items

At Beale and Third streets is: W. C. Handy Park
Nearly constant source of live music in this park, also the site of a statue of Handy.
Across Beale Street from this park is the:
Original Daisy Theatre
A favorite venue for various types of music, including rock, blues, and folk.

Continue another 2 long blocks up Beale Street and you will come to the:

Hunt-Phelan House
One of the most impressive historic homes in Memphis.
Now head back up Beale Street and pick a left on Main. This is the street down which the trolley runs, so if you’re feeling tired, you can hop on the trolley and win it south for the next 7 blocks. If you walk, turn left on Butler Street, and if you ride, walk east on Calhoun Street.

Just before you reach the corner of Front and Union streets, watch for the:

Carter Seed Store
West side of the street is the Carter Seed Store where the focus is on agricultural supplies and seeds. The store also features an old fashioned candy counter.
From the Carter Seed Store, take a left on Union Street and in 2 blocks to reach the banks of the Mississippi at an area known as:

“The cobblestones”
A free public parking area and where the Memphis Queen Line paddle-wheelers dock. The cobblestones were once used as ballast by boats coming up the river to pick up cargoes of cotton.

A growing population of white families also live in this space. The Hickory Ridge Mall, and the World Overcomer Outreach Ministries Church are located in this section of the city.

Golf is a wonderful game and I have spent many happy hours playing on my local golf course. But there seems to be something creeping into the game, more and more, which often spoils a round of golf for many players and that is, slow play. Golf surely should be a relaxing game, not a stressful one, but on occasion there are players that do test the patients of a saint.

In my experience, monotonous play is not so bad in itself, as long as you can keep moving along, it’s the lesser of the two evils, but when there are long hold ups, this in my view is not acceptable. Having said that, I do realise that things happen on the golf course that are genuinely unavoidable, but in this instance I am talking generally.

I’m clear people do not play golf slowly intentionally, and appear to be totally unaware of what they are doing or should I say not doing. So, to back players just be a runt bit more aware of what they and others are doing on the golf course, I notion I would honest write a few helpful golf tips on avoiding slow play and to having a more luscious and hopefully a more aesthetic come by card in the club house afterwards.

Start the day relaxed

The first tip is not really concerning slow play, but more about starting your golf day in the good way. When you bag up in the morning do it slowly and then try doing everything slowly and relaxed, until you reach the first tee, this will hopefully reflect in a positive procedure on the golf course.

Get to the golf course early

Give yourself plenty of time travelling to the golf course, its better to be waiting in the club house than waiting in a traffic pickle worrying that you’re going to be tedious. There’s nothing worse for a game of golf than arriving late, then rushing around trying to catch up. This can save you in totally the wrong frame of mind, for achieving a relaxing game and low scoring round of golf.

Getting organised when teeing off

When by the tee, make sure that every body in your group knows, in which order they are teeing off, and be ready. Make sure you have your correct tees and ball about your person. Don’t go rummaging about in the bag for golf balls and tees when people are waiting for you to tee off. It is also a safe conception to keep a couple of balls in your pocket at all times.

Playing your shot out of turn

When players in a group hit their golf balls to various parts of the golf course, unless you are playing in a competition, it might be quicker for you to take the next shot in the imperfect order of play.

Clearing the green early

If you have just finished your putts, don’t stand around on the green talking about the putt you should have holed. Clear the green straight away then talk about it on the way to the next tee.

Take your clubs with you

If you have hit a wayward shot, don’t forget to rob your golf trolley everywhere you go, but only where it’s physically possible that is, I have been guilty of this one myself. When looking for your golf ball after hitting a poor shot there is a tendency to forget about the trolley whilst you are trying to find the ball. Then once you have found it, the realisation hits you that your clubs are some distance away, so it’s a walk back to the trolley, bring the trolley back to the ball, select a club and take the shot. This is not gracious.

Being prepared to take your shot

Whilst your playing partner is taking his shot, if possible, compose sure you have already selected the club you are going to use for the next shot and you have a fare idea of where you would like it to go. It doesn’t sound worthy of a time saver but over the 18 holes and playing a four ball, it adds up.

Keep the scorecard up to date

Give yourself plenty of time to mark the scorecard; don’t leave it until it’s your turn to tee off. Try to get into a routine; otherwise you will end up asking your playing partners two or three holes further on, what they scored on the 6th, 7th and 8th hole. You will not be very popular.

Help your playing partners

If one of your group is having a problem in any way, providing you have already taken your shot, go and help, rather than just standing there waiting.

Eating and drinking on the golf course

Its always a valid idea to prefer plenty of water and some snacks with you onto the golf course, but please don’t be tempted to stop and have a bite to eat when there’s a chance it might hold up play. Try to eat snacks on the move, if possible, and perhaps take a drink whilst waiting at the tee.

Carry spares and be prepared for bad weather

Make sure, everything in the golf bag is in order and ready to use and is easy to get at, for example, water proofs, gloves, hat etc just in case the weather changes. You don’t want to be fumbling around in your bag, when all your friends came well prepared and organised. And they are all waiting for you to take your shot. It’s not a bad concept to carry spares such as, a golf glove, laces, pitch mark repairer, pencil or pen, plenty of balls and so on.

Letting players play through

This is an obvious one for most golfers. If your group is having problems, lost ball etc, and you anticipate a long wait, please ask the group that are playing behind you, to play through. This of course depends on whether you are in, or just behind a competition.

Hitting the golf ball straight

I know this tip is going to sound a bit cheeky, but it is really meant in the best possible way. This could help in preventing some hold ups on the golf course. When learning the game or just trying to improve. I wonder if it would be better to concentrate on hitting the ball straight, rather than trying to hit it out of sight. It’s amazing, the amount of golfers I have noticed, hitting the ball a long way, but can’t hit it straight. If you are a high handicap player, try slowing down your swing and you will keep the ball on the fairway more often, whilst the big hitters are looking for their balls in the woods.

I have noticed over the years that the vast majority of written golf instruction, especially magazines, try to teach you everything about golf, except how to hit the ball straight.

I hope the above tips are valid and interesting.
